Swedish municipalities hit by ransomware — is your business ready?
Dorotea and Vilhelmina municipalities were hit by ransomware on April 9. Here is what happened and what to check in your M365 environment.
Dorotea and Vilhelmina municipalities in Västerbotten, northern Sweden, were hit by a ransomware attack during the night of April 9. Dorotea immediately entered crisis management mode. Their switchboards went down. Åsele municipality was partially affected. A police report was filed the same day.
This is not a big-city problem. Dorotea has about 2,500 residents. Vilhelmina just over 6,500. Small organizations with limited IT resources — exactly like many of the businesses we work with every day.
Why this matters for you
If you run a company with 5-50 employees on Microsoft 365 Business Premium, you face fundamentally the same challenges as these municipalities. Limited IT staff, dependency on cloud services, and infrastructure that often grows faster than the security work around it.
The difference is that M365 Business Premium actually includes tools that can stop these attacks — if they are properly configured.
Three things to check now
1. Backup and recovery
It sounds basic, but we regularly see customers who have never tested their recovery process. Having backups is not the same as being able to restore. Run a test. Today.
2. Defender for Endpoint ransomware protection
Microsoft Defender for Business (included in M365 BP) has built-in ransomware protection with controlled folder access. Verify it is enabled and configured on all devices via Intune.
3. Conditional Access and MFA
Ransomware often starts with a compromised login. Make sure Conditional Access policies require MFA and that you use phishing-resistant methods like FIDO2 security keys — not just SMS.
